The first solo exhibition in Ireland by Sophie Calle, the internationally-acclaimed French artist, presents works ranging from 1979 to 2003 alongside new works made specifically for this exhibition. It is the first detailed referencing of the themes the artist has been working on throughout her career. For over 20 years Calle has exhibited her work in the form of photographic installations and chronicles, whose structure and layout reflect a narrative approach. In the early 1970’s Calle set off on a world trip that lasted seven years. During a stay in California in 1978 she took her first photographs – graves marked Father and Mother – with no professional intent. On her return to Paris she began ‘tailing’ people in the street, recording the results in notebooks containing photographs and texts. Other themes in the exhibition relate to absence, disappearance, loss, deprivation and love.
