Traces celebrates the IMMA Limited Editions Series, introduced by the Museum in 2003. The exhibition includes a variety of print works by Irish and international artists including Franz Ackermann, Michael Craig-Martin, Dorothy Cross, Gary Hume, Isaac Julien, Alex Katz, William McKeown, Elizabeth Peyton, Jack Pierson, Sean Scully and Terry Winters. The exhibition explores examples of the experimental nature of creating an artwork as an edition, various printmaking and editioning processes are exhibited which include screen-prints, etchings, lithographs and cibachrome prints.
To celebrate the exhibition newly created works and welcome additions to the series by renowned Irish artists Louis le Brocquy, Patrick Scott and Camille Souter are included. Louis le Brocquy presents an Intaglio print, a portrait of the acclaimed writer Samuel Beckett, while Patrick Scott creates a signature print work, drawing from imagery and motifs from his long career. Combining two subjects frequently explored by Camille Souter, aviation and war, We don’t want to see blood, 2009, is a very personal project for the artist, a journey into print-making that she has not made until now, her 80th year.
Exhibited together for the first time, these 32 editions form an important part of the IMMA Collection. The editions also serve as a way of tracing six years of exhibitions at the Museum by leading artists, both in solo and group displays. The series has grown due to the continuous generosity of artists, and all revenue raised from the sale of the editions are directed towards IMMA’s exhibition and education programmes.
A fully-illustrated publication accompanies the exhibition which includes quotes from the artists and texts on each of the limited editions by Seamus McCormack, Assistant Curator: Collections, IMMA. To buy the catalogue please click here
