Tom Hunter: Bathing Places in Dublin Bay

Process Room, 13.06.06- 25.06.06

Tom Hunter, Bull Island, 2006, Process Room, IMMA Tom Hunter, Bathing Places in Dublin, Forty- foot, 2006, Process Room, IMMA

Tom Hunter is a photographer based in London whose main body of work has dealt with representation of minority groups, portraits of people he has spent his life with. Tom is located in studio 13 and during his time in Ireland he has developed a project influenced by the sea and James Joyce’s Ulysses. The images shown are taken in different bathing locations around Dublin Bay and are all locations where Tom swam during his time in Ireland. The photographs are taken with a 4” x 5” pinhole camera.

A new art colour for our Irish poets: snotgreen.  You can almost taste it, can’t you?
He mounted to the parapet again and gazed out over Dublin bay, his fair oakpale hair stirring slightly.
- God, he said quietly.  Isn’t the sea what Algy calls it: a grey sweet mother?  The snotgreen sea.  The scrotumtightening sea.  Epi oinopa ponton.  Ah, Dedalus, the Greeks.  I must teach you.  You must read them in the original.  Thalatta!  Thalatta!  She is our great sweet mother.  Come and look.
James Joyce, Ulysses
