Cloud Illusions I Recall, which takes its title from the Joni Mitchell 1969 classic Both Sides Now, will include some 30 works, ranging in date from 1859 to 2013. Of vital importance to this exhibition are concepts of the poetic and the imagination of cinema. Emphatically not a cinematic survey exhibition, Cloud Illusions I Recall represents an anti-cinema, anti-white cube show, as works are explored in a fluid relationship with the artists involved. Cinema is considered as it manifests in the imagination of the mind, which these artists explore through the prism of the poetic. The process undertaken prior to the realisation of the final work is paramount, with emphasis also being placed on artists’ drawings, sketches, notations and other archival items in order to explore the poetic that lies behind the cinematic. The exhibition is co-curated by artists Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Cerith Wyn Evans and Rachael Thomas, Senior Curator: Head of Exhibitions at IMMA. The exhibition is presented in partnership with the Irish Film Institute and is supported by the French Embassy in Ireland and the Institut Francais.
Cloud Illusions I Recall includes work by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Cerith Wyn Evans, Marcel Broodthaers, James Coleman, Peter Doig, Lady Clementina Hawarden, Allen Ruppersberg, Cindy Sherman, Samuel Beckett and Andrey Tarkovsky, alongside films by Chris Marker, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Cerith Wyn Evans will contribute in both a curatorial and artistic capacity to the exhibition, with a selection of work by other artists. Gonzalez-Foerster will showcase work from her renowned series of dedicated atmospheric rooms, along with material from her wider working oeuvre, including a selection of personal photographs. A new work will be created by Wyn Evans especially for the exhibition. Taking the enigmatic text Imagination Dead Imagine (1965) by Samuel Beckett as its foundation, the work will exist as a choral performance on the opening night of the exhibition, orchestrated by Wyn Evans. Both artists will also contribute archival elements, and will put forth a selection of other artists, whom they believe to be similarly engaged with this atypical exploration of the cinematic.
A panel discussion, Art and Film: The Magnificent Obsession, will take place on Saturday 22 June, in partnership with the Irish Film Institute. Participants in this event will include artists, film-makers and academics, engaging in a discussion of the complex and ever-evolving relationship between art and cinema.
