The Táin Tapestries by Louis le Brocquy
Louis
le Brocquy,
Cúchulainn in warp-spasm
, 1999
The Museum celebrates the recent acquisition of a complete set of Louis le Brocquy’s 'Táin' Tapestries by exhibiting all 20 tapestries as a continuation of the 'Work in Focus' strand of programming. The tapestries, donated in 2001 grew out of le Brocquy’s remarkable set of illustrations for the translation of the 'Táin' legend by the poet Thomas Kinsella. The heroic story of the war between Ulster and the men of Connaught over the famous brown bull of Cooley is perfectly visualised by le Brocquy in his ink-drawings and again in the tapestries that developed from them. Louis le Brocquy and his well-known predecessor Jean Lurçat were landmark figures in the revitalisation of tapestry as an artform. The exhibition affords a rare opportunity to experience le Brocquy’s powerful combination of visual and narrative skills in this medium together with contextual information about this particular body of work.
A 'Work in Focus' leaflet accompanies the exhibition (price €1.50).
