Curated by writer, critic and lecturer Jon Bird, this exhibition spans 50 years of the artist's work and is the largest presentation of Golub's work in Europe to date.
Leon Golub is one of America's leading painters whose work has been influential to a number of arists, both in Europe and the US. Born in Chicago in 1922, he first came to prominence in the 1950s as part of the 'Monster School'. His early work used primitive, generic imagery to explore the human condition, but his later work became more direct and political with subjects ranging from the Vietnam War to racism and random acts of violence by mercenaries.
This exhibition will tour to South London Gallery, Albright Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York and Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York.
Echoes of the Real by Jon Bird, published by Reaktion Press, was published to coincide with the exhibition.
