Niamh O'Malley: Big Wheel

Process Room, 30.09.08- 12.10.08

Niamh O'Malley, Big Wheel, Process Room, IMMA, 2008

A real-time video projection is aligned with a large painting; oil on primed aluminium. The projection is looped and silent; it fades to white every 5min 15sec to reveal the painting. The observational footage was recorded at a temporary funfair outside Dublin. Parts of the image become saturated and seemingly stilled as the projected light lands on the painted ‘double image’.

O’Malley is interested in the fabricated nature of the viewing experience. Her works often consist of highly seductive surfaces which collapse on close viewing into simple constructions; a slide or a video, projected onto a painting. She is interested in a plurality of ‘speeds’; the stillness and physicality of the painted surface alongside the real-time loop of recorded moments. Her works generate the potential for an incursion of unreailty into a real world alongside a disenchantment with the recorded ‘image’ as illusion.

Recent exhibitions include Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin; Green on Red Gallery, Dublin; Kenworthy-Ball, Zurich, Galerie Baumet Sultana, Paris; Estorick Collection, London, Palazzo delle Papesse, Siena and PS1, MoMa, New York. Her work is included in numerous collections including the Hugh Lane, Dublin City Gallery and the Arts Council of Ireland. O’Malley received a PhD from the University of Ulster, Belfast in 2003. She was awarded the International Studio Programme Residency at PS1, MoMa, 2004; Northern Irish Fellowship at The British School at Rome, 2000; HIAP Residency, Helsinki, 2008 and the Liam Walsh Award, Co, Mayo, 2008. Her recent publication ‘Torch’ is available from (External) . Further information on Niamh O’Malley’s practice can be found at (External) .
