In the Process Room at IMMA, Meza presents [Silence.] , an installation made from recordings of sound frequencies above the range of human hearing. Most humans only hear frequencies between 20 Hz to 20000 Hz. Scanning Dublin’s soundscape from 25000 Hz and above with specialized audio equipment, Meza has recorded this ‘silence’ as a means of exploring the invisible. In a reversal of everyday perception, the sounds are linked with video footage of Dublin streets, empty of traffic or inhabitants.
Abinadi Meza is interested in using ephemeral media such as sound to create transformative spaces and unusual situations that suggest new possibilities, readings and usages to visitors. Meza’s work is often impermanent and performative in nature, drawing either formally or conceptually from a range of artistic practices including Butoh, Arte Povera, and sound art.
Abinadi Meza’s work has recently been shown at the Biennale for Electronic Art, Perth Australia; La Casa Encendida, Madrid; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Hipersonica Festival, São Paulo Brazil. Meza’s practice often employs unusual or conceptual usages of sound in radio broadcasts, live performances, gallery installations and public interventions.
