Art as an Argument - Brian O'Doherty and IMMA's Novak/O'Doherty Collection
3 July - 13 October 2013
From the Novak/O'Doherty collection, the Kunstmuseum Bayreuth presents a dual-exhibition of conceptual works of Brian O'Doherty/Patrick Ireland and the collection of Post-War American Art he and his wife, art historian Barbara Novak, donated to the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 2010. The Collection includes works by friends and artists Edward Hopper, Marcel Duchamp, Christo, Cornell, Feldman, Levine, LeWitt, Lichtenstein, Rauschenberg, Rosenquist and Segal.
Central to the exhibition is O'Doherty's own work. Deeply influenced by Marcel Duchamp and his surreal view, O'Doherty did Portrait of Marcel Duchamp as a cardiogram of his heart beat in 1967 included in the exhibition. Also included is Chess Piece where performances take place during the exhibition.
Like Duchamp, O'Doherty questions normal ideas of art, artist and the art market. His work is an important part of American conceptual art as his different personae and perspectives reflect the awareness of perception and often points out the ironic in overly accepted general views.
