VISIT THE IRISH MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (IMMA)
Throughout the school year, IMMA is free to visit for individuals and groups. Up to five exhibitions of modern and new art are open to the public. IMMA is situated on the historic grounds of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, which include a formal garden, large meadows and artists’ studios and residence. IMMA is walking distance from both Kilmainham Gaol and the National Museum at Collins Barracks. Prior to a class visit, teachers may wish to visit an exhibition to check its relevance to the age or stage of development of their group. On school days, IMMA and its grounds are open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 10.00am and Wednesday from 10.30am. IMMA is open on Saturday from 10.00am and on Sunday from 12noon. The Museum closes each day at 5.30pm. IMMA’s galleries are closed on Mondays except on Bank Holidays.

IMMA PRIMARY SCHOOL PROGRAMME 2009/ 2010
The IMMA Primary School Programme is an excellent way for children to have first-hand experiences of art. Each visit as part of this programme includes a 75 minute guided tour based on themes from selected artworks. Participating teachers can also download a set of notes regarding the exhibitions that children will visit, exploring themes in selected artworks and suggesting starting-points for art projects back in the classroom.

Primary classes visiting IMMA, as part of the Primary School Programme, between 13 April and 25 June 2010, will mainly focus on the ideas and artworks in the exhibition Vertical Thoughts: Morton Feldman and the Visuals Arts . Below, primary school teachers can download notes on the exhibition and selected artworks, as well as guidelines for the class visit to IMMA.

The Curriculum & Contemporary Art: Art workshops for primary teachers
A series of workshops for primary teachers take place over six Saturdays from September 2009 to March 2010. Each workshop explores a different strand of the curriculum in relation to current exhibitions at IMMA. Artist Claire Halpin leads each workshop, joined by artists or IMMA staff who specialise in a particular area of art. This is an opportunity to enjoy the surrounds of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, explore a current art show and experience creative processes and materials in the company of contemporary artists. Workshops are free and you can sign-up to one or all sessions, but booking is essential.
