VISIT THE IRISH MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (IMMA)
Throughout the school year, IMMA is free to visit for individuals and groups. Up to five exhibitions of modern and new art are open to the public. IMMA is
Primary School Programme 2013. Photography Mirjam Keune situated on the historic grounds of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, which include a formal garden, large meadows and artists’ studios and residence. IMMA is walking distance from both Kilmainham Gaol and the National Museum at Collins Barracks. Prior to a class visit, teachers may wish to visit an exhibition to check its relevance to the age or stage of development of their group. On school days, IMMA and its grounds are open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 10.00am and Wednesday from 10.30am. IMMA is open on Saturday from 10.00am and on Sunday from 12noon. The Museum closes each day at 5.30pm. IMMA’s galleries are closed on Mondays except on Bank Holidays.
BOOK A GUIDED VISIT TO AN IMMA EXHIBITION
You can book a guided tour and responsive workshop at IMMA. Lasting 2 hours, a primary class will explore a selection of artworks or an exhibition in the company of IMMA gallery Mediators. There are set times for guided tours: at 10:00am on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; and at 10:30am on Wednesday. Tours must be booked three weeks in advance of your intended visit and each group’s size is limited to 32 children. The IMMA Primary School Programme lasts 2 hours and includes:
• A guided tour of selected artworks;
• An artmaking workshop based on themes covered in the guided tour;
• A set of notes which participating teachers can download regarding the exhibitions that children will visit, exploring themes in selected artworks and suggesting a few starting points for related art projects back in the classroom.
Each tour is led by IMMA gallery Mediators. There are set times for Primary School Programme tours: at 10:00am on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 10.30am on Wednesday. Tours must be booked at least three weeks in advance of your intended visit, and each group’s size is limited to 32 children. (If you need to book in less than three weeks, please contact Katy Fitzpatrick at email: katy.fitzpatrick@imma.ie to check availability). IMMA’s Primary School Programme will begin again in the autumn when the gallery is fully open at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham. Further information to follow later in the summer.
A fee of €25.00 per class is charged for the Primary School Programme. If your school is listed on the DEIS Scheme, there is no charge. Payment with Laser or credit card is accepted on-line.

The Curriculum & Contemporary Art: Art workshops for primary teachers on Saturdays, 10:00am - 1:00pm
This continuing professional development programme for primary teachers is led by artists and IMMA’s Mediators and takes place on 6 Saturdays over the school year between September and April. Workshops explore different strands of the curriculum in relation to exhibitions at IMMA and are led by artists in an area of their expertise. The workshops provide an opportunity for teachers to explore contemporary art practice through discussion and creative processes. Participation is free, and one or more sessions can be booked.
