Approaches to Paper explores the material qualities of paper and the significance of preparatory work in studio practice. The exhibition offers a snapshot of the scope of artistic attitudes towards the subject of drawing and working on/with paper. The works on display range from preparatory works on paper for existing sculptures to the book as object and motif, animation film and paper mãché.

Artists include Edward Allington, Andrew Folan, Antony Gormley, Alice Maher, Hughie O’Donoghue, Kiki Smith, Kara Walker and Hermione Wiltshire. There is a special focus on the studio practice of veteran British sculptor Bill Woodrow who has lent preparatory and other works from his studio that situate his work from the 1980s to present day.

Talks and Events

The Winter Lecture I Making Space by Antony Gormley
Tuesday 8 December 2015, 7 – 8pm, The Chapel
Artist Antony Gormley is widely acclaimed for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space. To mark and celebrate Gormleys major contribution to the practice and discourse of contemporary sculpture since the 1970s, the artist will present a lecture that considers his current practice in the light of his seminal work at IMMA shortly after the museum opened in 1991.

This talk will be followed by a drinks reception and is in association with AICA Ireland.
