The Gordon Lambert Archive Project / Heritage Week Display

The Gordon Lambert Archive Project
Heritage Week Display / Tue 23 - Sun 28 August 2016

The Gordon Lambert Archive Project is an ongoing project to catalogue Gordon Lambertís archive funded with help from The Heritage Council. The archive has been held in IMMA since 2005 and contains a fascinating collection of material including professional and private correspondence, printed material, press cuttings, photographs and ephemera spanning over 50 years. Former Managing Director of Jacobís Biscuits, Gordon Lambert was also a dedicated collector and supporter of the arts in Ireland. He was a member of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and served on the boards of the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, the National Gallery of Ireland and IMMA. He was appointed to the International Council of MoMA in 1980.

A long time campaigner for the establishment of a museum for modern art in Ireland, he marked the opening of IMMA in 1991 with the donation to the museum of much of his private collection of Irish and international artists. Gordon Lambert was an observer, supporter and friend of many artists, gallerists, professional and public figures. He was also a diligent recorder and collector of printed material, memorabilia and ephemera. As such his archive contains an extensive volume of material which provides rich insight into both the construction of a private collection and the development of the cultural landscape in Ireland over a time of great change and expansion.

Gordon Lambert was one of the first and most generous supporters of IMMA since the campaign for its creation began in the late 1980s. His private collection of over 300 artworks was gifted in stages to the IMMA Collection following its opening in 1991 and includes many well-loved pieces now familiar to our regular visitors. Since 2005 IMMA has also held Gordonís expansive art library and archive containing letters, cards, photographs, printed material and ephemera collected over six decades. With the help of a grant from the Heritage Council we have now begun the absorbing task of cataloguing this fascinating resource.

On Tuesday 23 August from 10.30-11.30am, join us for an introductory discussion and preview of material from IMMAís Gordon Lambert archive, followed by tea and Jacobís biscuits. The Archive will remain on display until Sunday 28 August.
