noon: Heritage Tour / RHK Building & Gardens

Friday 10 November, Meet at 12noon in IMMA's Project Spaces

The history of the RHK tells us that noon was ritually a time for resting and lunch for the soldiers. Exploring the intersections of history, heritage and domestic activities related to IMMA’s site and grounds of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham(RHK);  join Michael Wardick (IMMA Visitors Engagement Team) for a walking tour that visits the historical sites of the RHK’s great hall and chapel where you can see and hear the story behind one of the most iconic Dublin buildings and Ireland's foremost example of fine 17th century architecture and gardens – now home to the Irish Museum of Modern Art.  To continue with this intriguing story of local heritage, a walking tour of the RHK formal gardens and meadows will be led by Head Gardener, Mary Condon.

Tours takes place indoors and outdoors so weather appropriate clothing is advised. Programmed in conjunction with the IMMA project noon, an amalgam of heritage and contemporary influences reflecting the IMMA/RHK site and its various domestic functions.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The RHK building comprises a North Wing containing the Master's Quarters, the Great Hall, the Chapel and the Vaulted Cellar with the 19th-century kitchen. The South, East and West Wings of the building provided accommodation for the pensioners. The history of the site includes ancient burial grounds, early Christian monuments, a Viking settlement and a medieval monastery. The RHK was a retirement home and infirmary for nearly 250 years for military veterans who lived and died there. The Old Man’s House is an onsite heritage gallery which explores the stories of these soldiers alongside those of the hospital staff, from the earliest beginnings, through to its restoration and the founding of IMMA. The exhibition is free and open Museum hours, see details here.
