Shirin NeshatThis exhibition is the first showing in Ireland of the work of the internationally-acclaimed film and photographic artist Shirin Neshat. The exhibition includes her first major film work, 'Turbulent', which won the prestigious Golden Lion Prize at the 1999 Venice Biennale; and will also mark the first European showing of her recently-completed films 'Pulse' and 'Passage'. Her films combine a strong visual aesthetic with specially commissioned soundtracks to create an immediate emotional impact on the viewer. The exhibition also includes photographs relating to other major film works, including 'Soliloquy', 'Rapture' and 'Fervor'.
Born in Iran, Neshat moved to the US in 1974 and did not return to Iran until 1990. Influenced by post-revolutionary Iranian film making, Neshat’s work crosses the boundaries between Western and Islamic cultures and challenges many preconceived notions held in both cultures. Neshat has described her work “as a visual discourse on the subjects of feminism and contemporary Islam – a discourse that puts certain myths and realities to the test, claiming that they are far more complex than most of us imagined”.
Shirin Neshat has shown in many major international galleries and exhibitions, including the Serpentine Gallery, London: the Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, 2000, and the Whitney Biennial, New York, 2000.
A catalogue will accompany the exhibition (price £16.00, €20.31).
The exhibition is presented in association with Panasonic Ireland.
