Amy Stephens (UK)
Amy Stephens has an elemental sensibility to form that is explored through materials and social space. With an interest in taxonomy and the appropriation of objects, the artist uses an eclectic mix of materials to combine the collaborative relationship between the natural world and the man-made. Through the grouping and re-grouping of objects, elegant sculptural compositions inhabit the space offering a sense of playfulness whilst questioning notions of performance, value and beauty. Pared-down to a formal minimalism, architectonic structures become coded within the work creating interplay with seduction and control whilst offering a confident aesthetic. These fragile structures reveal the notion of equilibrium, that tense and very fine line between that which we know and that which we fear, at the centre of her current work. Stephens lives and works in London. Recent solo exhibitions include Aestheticising the Inanimate, Islington Museum, London, 2010 and The Rise of the Wapiti, Other Gallery, Banff Centre, Canada, 2010. Recent group exhibitions include No Soul For Sale - A Festival of Independents, Tate Modern, London, 2010; Meet Pamela, John Jones Project Space, London, 2009; My Island Downtown, Hafnarstraeti Gallery, Reykjavik, Iceland, 2009; 195 Miles, Project Space Leeds in collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery, London, 2008. Amy Stephens was selected for the Self-directed Creative Residency at the Banff Centre, Canada in 2010 and for the Artists’ Residency with SÍM, Iceland in 2009.
Amy Stephens work was shown in the Process Room from 4 October until 16 October 2011.
