Representation of people, or the portrait, is a well established medium in the world of art. Every portrait generates further questions: Who is represented in the work? Is it a self-portrait or someone else’s ideas projected onto the canvas? Why has the artist represented themselves or other people in this way? What do you see when you look at me? will pose some of these questions to a specifically targeted younger audience who may not previously have had the opportunity to engage with pieces from the IMMA Collection in such a way. Today young people are faced with questions of representation more than ever and with the development of online social fora they constantly and often unconsciously present themselves or an “image” of themselves to a public audience.
This exhibition creates a forum for young people to explore these ideas of representation and self- representation in a healthy environment.
