Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva: Me, You & Them
The Process Room, 15.03.05- 27.03.05
Much of Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva’s work is realised through taking risks in developing new projects for specific venues or places. The history of her practice has developed through residencies, commissions and exhibitions, where she responds to the environment, interior or exterior, by spending time researching the place, its local history and materials. Elpida is concerned with space, above and below and she is interested in exposing spaces, which we normally do not encounter, including light, darkness, colour, texture and smell.
After arriving at IMMA Elpida’s work started to draw from the history of the Museum. Between the late 1600’s and early 1900’s The Royal Hospital was used as a residency for many old, sick and disabled soldiers. Using photography and image manipulation Elpida has used the architecture of the Museum to investigate notions of absences in time, following the journeys that have happened throughout the Museums existence and trying to capture the passing of time in the courtyard space.
In the Process Room, Elpida is playing with the image through different technical and timing formats. Following on from this experiment the project will be finalised in an edited moving digital image and shown as four short films projected into the four corners of a room, joining together to complete an external space, internally. When the viewer enters the space their silhouette becomes part of the visual journey.
Elpida’s residency is partially supported by The Arts Council England, South East.
