Lecture| Cultures of Domesticity in Contemporary Art -JaneHumphries
Thursday 23 January 2014, 6.00pm, Lecture Room, IMMA
Dr. Jane Humphries discusses how artists have depicted cultures of ‘domesticity’ and the ‘everyday’ to question the larger historical context, is the focus of this talk. By considering the multiple aspects of labor, processes, materials and iconography the domestic, and everyday offers artists, Dr. Jane Humphries ponders how and why these have evolved within art practice in relation to value systems.
A selection of artworks in the exhibition One foot in the Real World, will act as a framework to address the artistic transformation of domestic and the everyday in which to investigate issues of identity, especially gender, where, she argues, the 'domestic' and 'everyday' enable artists to create a liminality between real and imagined universes.
