IMMA Guided Tours

Guided Tours

The Museum’s Mediator Team (gallery staff) present free guided tours every week on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 2:30pm. No booking is required and tours depart from the main reception area.

Pre-booked Guided Tour

Tours must be booked at least three weeks in advance. Maximum of 32 per tour advised. Groups can book a guided tour of an exhibition led by a member of IMMA’s Mediator Team.
Pre-booked tours are available Tuesday - Friday 10.00am, 11.45am, 2.30pm and 4.00pm (except Wednesday 11.45am, 2.30pm and 4.00pm).

Guided Tour & Workshop

On Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:30pm groups of max. 15 participants can book a guided tour followed by a workshop based in the gallery or workshop studio space. The combination of tour and workshop takes approximately two hours and is facilitated by a member of IMMA’s Mediator Team

Guided Tour & Visit to an Artist in Residence

Groups of max. 15 participants can book a guided tour followed by a visit to one of the artists in residence in their studio in IMMA’s Artists' Residency Programme. The combination of tour and artist studio visit takes approximately one hour and 15 minutes. Studio visits are subject to artists availability and cannot be guaranteed. A staff member will contact you by email or phone prior to your visit to confirm whether or not an artist is available to meet with the visiting group.

Discussion Space

Workshop studio space can be made available to groups, especially third-level and college groups, who wish to follow up their guided tour with a discussion session. The guided tour is led by a member of IMMA’s Mediator team and the discussion session is led by the group. The guided tour takes approximately 45 minutes and the discussion space is available for one hour following the tour, subject to availability.

Booking an IMMA Guided Tour

      • Teachers, tutors or group leaders can book guided tours of IMMA’s exhibitions for their students/ groups.  
      • Each tour is led by IMMA Mediators (gallery staff).  
      • Guided tours are free and last 45 minutes approximately.  
      • There are set times for guided tours: Tuesday to Friday: 10:00am, 11:45am, 2:30pm and 4:00pm (No 10.00am tour on Wednesday).
      • Tours must be booked at least three weeks in advance of your intended visit.
      • Choosing a specific exhibition please allow two weeks from the opening date before booking your tour.
      • All children and school groups must be accompanied by an adult throughout the tour.
      • The adult to children/school group (aged 18 and under) supervision ratio is: 1:16.  Please contact the museum should you have difficulty meeting these requirements
      • A basement room near the café is available for children eating packed lunches for 45 minutes after your tour – it must be booked on-line as part of the tour-booking process.
      • If due to unexpected circumstances your tour date may need to be changed the Museum will contact you to organise a new date.

      • The New Galleries, the Ground Floor West Gallery and the cafe and bookshop at IMMA are fully accessible by wheelchair users.  Wheelchairs are available upon request.  Please note that in advance of structural works being carried out by the Office of Public Works, and on their advice, the Museum is unable to facilitate access by lift dependent visitors, including wheelchair users, to the First Floor Galleries in the main building until further notice.  Access is also limited to the Ground Floor East Gallery.  The Museum apologises for this inconvenience.

Booking an IMMA Guided Tour

IMMA Primary School Programme

  • The IMMA Primary School Programme includes a 75 minute guided tour/ museum visit based on themes from a selected exhibition.

  • Each visit is led by IMMA gallery staff, the Mediators.

  • Participating teachers can download a set of notes regarding the exhibitions that children will visit, exploring themes in selected artworks and suggesting starting-points for art projects back in the classroom.

  • There are set times for Primary School Programme tours: at 10:00am on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 11:45am on Wednesday.

  • Tours must be booked at least three weeks in advance of your intended visit.

  • All children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the tour. At least two adults need to accompany 32 children.

  • The maximum number of children per tour is 32.

  • A fee of €25.00 is charged for the Primary School Programme. However, if your school is listed on the DEIS Scheme, there is no charge.

  • A basement room for eating packed lunches, near the café, is available for 45 minutes after your tour. This room must be booked on-line as part of the tour-booking process.
